A CAMPAIGN to get free parking introduced at a Caister car park took a step forward after Great Yarmouth Borough Council's cabinet agreed to pass the matter on to its parking steering group.
Residents and borough councillors have been fighting to end charging in Beach Road car park during the summer months so holidaymakers no longer left their cars in neighbouring streets, causing congestion.
The long-running saga has been going on since 2007 when more than 260 residents signed a petition organised by borough councillor Marie Field calling for the car park to be made free all year round.
She believed villagers in Beach Road and Manor Road were having to deal with cars cluttering their streets because tourists were avoiding the car park charges.
The call to end the charges was rejected by the cabinet in May because members feared the borough council would lose the �8,000 revenue generated by the car park during the tourist season.
The steering group has the authority to drop the car parking charges.
