A NEW initiative to combat speeding motorists in Bradwell has had to be abandoned after only two people volunteered to take part.

The village's parish council had initially put out an appeal in the village newsletter in October for volunteers to come forward to participate in the Speedwatch scheme to stop motorists speeding in Lords Lane, Mill Lane and Green Lane.

A six-strong team was needed to monitor traffic and tell the police of any cars caught exceeding the speed limit. The police would then write to the motorists asking them to watch their speed when using the Bradwell roads.

However, following a second appeal through the same newsletter in March the plans to start the Speedwatch scheme were scrapped after only two people came forward.

Jeremy Caborn, clerk of Bradwell Parish Council, said the decision to start the scheme was made after villagers raised concerns about speeding cars at the village's annual parish meeting in May last year at the Mill Lane Community Centre.

He said the template for Bradwell was the successful Hopton speedwatch scheme, but a number of other Speedwatchs have been set up in the Yarmouth borough, including the North Yarmouth Road Safety Group (NYRSG), which is trying to combat speeding motorists in Caister Road, Yarmouth.

“The police have got their own measures to deal with speed, but this is more a community initiative in partnership with the parish council. They want to encourage people to drive more carefully for the general good of the people of Bradwell,” Mr Caborn said.

He added: “After about six or seven months of trying we decided we could not make anymore progress.”

However, he said if more people came forward willing to participate in the Spedwatch initiative then the scheme could be revived.

The NYRSG will hold its general meeting at St Paul's Church in Caister Road on May 24 when the newly-formed Speedwatch group will appoint a chairman, vice-chairman, treasurer and secretary.
