Great Yarmouth’s MP Brandon Lewis started his role in a top government position this week following Prime Minister Theresa May’s cabinet reshuffle.

Conservative Mr Lewis was appointed as Minister of State for Policing and the Fire Service at the Home Office.

Mr Lewis was previously fire minister when he was a junior at the Department of Communities and Local Government.

Mr Lewis said: “I am delighted to be moving up to be Minister of State at the Home Office with responsibility for policing and the fire service.

“I am pleased to have been asked to serve in my new role continuing the work that our Prime Minister has overseen whilst at the Home Office and to support her government more widely in delivering our manifesto.

“I will of course continue to work hard to represent everyone in Great Yarmouth and to ensure we continue to push for the investment we want locally.

“We have secured money for flood defences and road improvements but we need to ensure we continue to push for the third river crossing we need and further funding for our sea defences.”

Before the announcement he had been tipped for the role of Transport Secretary in Mrs May’s cabinet.

Responsibility for fire services was moved to the Home Office - Theresa May’s old department - in January as part of a push to see closer working between the two blue light services.

As part of the changes Mr Lewis was replaced as housing and planning minister by Gavin Barwell.

“I very much enjoyed my time at the Department for Communities and Local Government, and am delighted to have been able to have played a key role in ensuring that the Housing and Planning bill became law. Gavin Barwell is an excellent successor and I wish him all the best in his new role. “
