Before a catastrophic motorbike accident brainy and super fit Sarah Woods could have zoomed around Race for Life's 5km course like it was a walk in the park.

But having already made mincemeat of a gloomy prognosis which said she would never walk or talk again the 34-year-old from Hemsby is proud of every unsteady step that takes her closer to her fundraising and finish-line goal.

Now the inspirational cancer fundraiser is setting the wheels in motion - and then hoping to cast them aside - for her second assault on the course.

Disabled following the accident five years ago Sarah competed alongside serious runners crossing the line in a remarkable 2hrs 36mins - the female winner having completed the 5kms before she had finished her first.

This year she hopes to improve on her time and resist the urge to fall back on her wheelchair, walking the whole way.

The former high-flying pharmacist will start with the first race runners on May 1 - but expects to still be picking her way around the Norwich showground course as the second race begins.

“There is a fighting chance I'll make it home before they queue up to start race two and I picked that day because at least there are still people milling around when I get done.

“My training is based at the Cranbrook Centre physio department at Northgate Hospital. My physio has put together a mini programme for general everyday purposes, but I am using it as a training focus. I'm at Northgate twice a week but do the programme daily at home too. I am hoping to walk the full 5km and not need the wheelchair. It wont be too hard to pick me out - I'll be the only one still walking between the two races on May 3 with mum and the St John Ambulance member keeping up the rear with me.”

Sarah who lives independently but close to her parents Julie and Ted in Hemsby was left with the capabilities of someone who had had a stroke following the accident in Wrexham, Wales during a motorbike lesson.

The few fractures she sustained had healed by the time she regained consciousness.
