MOTORISTS and pedestrians were delayed for nearly 40 minutes in Great Yarmouth after Haven Bridge failed to close properly.

Traffic was backed up for a mile along South Quay and there were also jams in North Quay and roads surrounding the Town Hall, including Greyfriars Way, after mechanical problems hit the river crossing at 3.30pm today (Friday).

Engineers finally repaired the fault at 4.10pm.

Workmen from Eastport, which owns the bridge, have been carrying out maintenance work on the bridge every night for the last couple of months which is due to end tomorrow (Saturday).

Police allowed some pedestrians to cross along one of the pavements during the delay and engineers helped the elderly and children to negotiate the small gap between the two sections of road which failed to close again after allowing a vessel through on the River Yare.
