A Year 11 student from Broadland High School, Hoveton, was announced the winner of the local heat of the Rotary Young Chef Competition held at Flegg High School on Monday.

Haidee de Fraine devised and cooked a three course, healthy menu for two which consisted of corn fritters followed by stir-fried chicken in a plum sauce with rice and stir-fried vegetables, and then stuffed baked apples.

The competition, which took place at Flegg High School, Martham, was judged by Richard Hughes of The Lavender House Restaurant and Cookery School in Brundall.

Ten students from five Norfolk schools took part in the competition to encourage young people to develop their cookery and food presentation skills, consider healthy eating options, prove their organisational and planning skills, and cope in a demanding environment.

Announcing Haidee de Fraine the winner of the local heat, Richard Hughes said he was very impressed by her use of locally sourced, seasonal produce. Haidee won a one-to-one cookery lesson with Richard Hughes at The Lavender House when she will get the chance to cook for her friends and family and she will now go on to compete in the District Rotary Young Chef Competition in February.

Other participants in the local heat were Siobhan Sweeney and Antonia Dale from Flegg High School, Joshua Page and Matthew Hurn from Acle High School, Chelsea Dyke and Nicola Charman from Cromer High School, Martha Jones and Antonia Culverhouse from Great Yarmouth High School, and Rebeckah Mitchell from Broadland High School.
