Acle High School is looking for a traditional Broads sailing boat which pupils can renovate and then learn to sail in after school.

It is part of a three year project involving a “Lads, Dads and Grandads” evening class to encourage more boys to get involved with extra curricular activities.

The classes will be led by a former teacher who has boatbuilding experience.

The Broads Authority's Sustainable Development Fund has given £15,420 towards the scheme which includes financing a boat shed on the school playing field once it has gained planning permission. More money is still needed for tools and materials.

“The Broads and Marshes theme is at the heart of the school's curriculum, to encourage the children to celebrate the area in which they live,” said Janis Austin, extended school's co-ordinator. “We have lots of girls staying for after school activities and we're trying to encourage more boys to stay too. Of course, girls and mums are welcome to take part as well.

“We are hoping someone will be prepared to give us a half decker or something similar that needs a bit of TLC which the children can do up themselves. We are also appealing to parents and anyone else who might be interested to help us with knowledge, tools or materials. We are very grateful to the Broads Authority for their support in this project.”
