Green-fingered residents have the chance to win a year’s free subscription to Great Yarmouth’s garden waste kerbside collection scheme – by completing a quick and easy survey about the Venetian Waterways.

To celebrate the £2.7m project to restore the Grade II-listed Waterways and Boating Lake, Great Yarmouth Borough Council has teamed up with the Mercury to give away five brown wheelie bins plus free fortnightly collections for 12 months from April 2018.
The council is surveying residents about how they use the Waterways, their views of the attraction and its community and historic value.
To stand a chance of winning a year’s free subscription to the garden waste collection scheme, residents should take part in the survey by Wednesday, February 21.
Five lucky winners will be picked at random from participants.
Thanks to a £1.7m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund/Big Lottery Fund Parks for People Programme, plus further support from New Anglia LEP and the Department for Communities and Local Government, the on-site preparatory work has started at the Waterways.
The borough council is now seeking volunteers from across the community to get involved with the project in a range of roles, including gardening activities to reinstate the original beautiful and bold planting scheme, dating from 1928.

Over the last two weeks and ahead of bird-nesting season, GYB Services Ltd, the borough council’s operational partner, has been preparing the gardens by removing much of the existing planting, which is not in keeping with the original planting scheme.
The Venetian Waterways opened in 1928, creating a miniature Venice on the town’s north promenade.
However, over the decades it has withered to time and the elements and has seen better days.
Alison Hall, former exhibitions coordinator at the Time and Tide Museum has started as coordinator for the project.
Surveys can be completed online at www.great-yarmouth.gov.uk/have-your-say or pick up a paper form at the Town Hall or Comeunity at 135 King Street. The competition winners will be chosen by the council.
