A local scout group have been trying their hand at radio presenting as part of their tasks to achieve their communicator activity badges.
North Yarmouth Buccaneers Scouting Group, based at Alderman Swindell School in Great Yarmouth, took to the airwaves on Saturday afternoon, April 21, on the borough’s FM community station, Harbour Radio.
Accompanied by scout leaders Jackie Esposito and Dave Bavington, the youngsters, aged six to 18, learned how to use the broadcast desk and the features of the play-out system used in the studio.
The group also talked about their recent involvement in community activity, including where they held a sponsored sleepover at St Nicholas Minster in Yarmouth, in aid of promoting the homelessness where the money raised will be donated to Tribal Trust Soup Kitchen.
Leader Jackie Esposito said: “It was really fantastic to see our young individuals excited about their visit to Harbour Radio and even more so to embrace and enjoy the whole experience on the day.
“We cannot wait to go back and talk even more about the work we do within the local community!”
There are many reasons why young people join the Scouts, from making friends, having fun, learning new skills - and lots of camping and outdoor activities. They also enjoy bushcraft, fire-lighting, archery, judo and cooking to name a few of the activities.
The group is now looking forward to the Peak District hill walking camp later in May where they will take part with other groups from Norfolk.
Dave Eagle, Harbour station co-crdinator and presenter, who heads up the mentoring of The Harbour Youth Matters Show project said: “It was so lovely to see all their faces beaming both before and while on-air, but more importantly, to hear about all the fantastic work they do within our local community here in Great Yarmouth!
“The great thing about The Harbour Youth Matters Show is to give our younger generation a voice and showcase exactly what they do all while improving self-confidence and promoting social inclusion.”
North Yarmouth Buccaneers Scouting Group meets every Tuesday between 6pm and 8pm at Alderman Swindell.
Harbour Radio broadcasts to the Yarmouth and surrounding areas on 107.4FM and online via the “listen live” tabs on their Facebook page and www.harbourradio.co.uk, and on the Tune In App available on mobile devices.
