The transformation of the South Denes area of Great Yarmouth into a hub for the energy sector is on track, a detailed council report has stated.

A document called South Denes Energy Update has been prepared by Great Yarmouth Borough Council and looks at construction of a seaside energy park and the benefits of a local enterprise zone.

The Great Yarmouth Energy Park is centered around Nelson’s Monument and was launched in 2013 with the aim of regenerating the area.

The report says work is “progressing at pace” with what is described as land assembly a key priority with non-port related businesses agreeing to relocate off site.

It adds the demolition of Vanguard Point has been completed on time and is being marketed with the benefit of enterprise zone status, site clearance talks are ongoing over the Millora Works land, and site demolition contracts are out to tender for the Ocean Yard and ITS sites with clearance expected to be completed in the third quarter of the year.

The Global Signs and Engravings premises in the Nelson’s Monument area are also being marketed for energy sector and port-related companies.

Norfolk County Council has put in place £2.75m of funding for the park, with the borough council contributing £250,000.

In relation to the South Denes Enterprise Zone, which was set up in 2012 and was followed by a local development order, the document says it has provided companies with “a wide range of benefits”.

It provides a business rate discount for five years, has created 231 jobs with 10 businesses there.

The borough council paper says key investment recently includes Vettenfall signing a memorandum with Peel Ports for an operation base within the port, which could create up to 150 jobs.

It also highlights the start of the construction of the 81-bedroom Premier Inn as part of the Edge development which is due to open in the spring of 2019 and £3m of port enhancement work for the Triton Knoll offshore windfarm.

The report concludes: “There is an ambitious programme of delivery and promotion for the South Denes area in the energy sector. A number of enquiries are being received from companies.”
