TRADING Standards officers found nine out of 47 shops in Great Yarmouth sold tobacco to children under 18 during a routine visit last month.

The officers from the county council department sent an underage volunteer to shops to find out how many served under age children.

Funded by NHS Great Yarmouth and Waveney, the initiative was undertaken in the area after a lifestyle survey highlighted that an average of 21.4pc of the population of Yarmouth and Waveney smoke, with the vast majority of smokers beginning before they are 18. The visit highlighted retailers’ duty to fight smoking.
