THE three-way fight for the Great Yarmouth Borough Council seat left vacant following the death of a councillor has been won by the Conservatives.

Hundreds of people turned out to polling stations to vote in the Bradwell South and Hopton Ward by-electon on Thursday.

Conservative party candidate Martin Plane, of Mill Lane, Bradwell, took the seat with 557 votes.

Meanwhile, Labour candidate Hilary Wainwright, of Lapwing close, Bradwell, came second with 407 votes and UKIP candidate Colin Aldred, of Groomes Close, Hopton, third with 159 votes.

Three polling stations were used for the election; the Communal Room at The Close, Bradwell; the Leo Coles Pavilion, Green Lane, Bradwell; and the Village Hall at Hopton.

The by-election was called following the death of Conservative councillor Mike Butcher.
