Year 6 pupils and staff at Caister Junior School went back in time to the Victorian period when Colonel George Winchurch and Mrs Felitia Rodgers paid them a visit from Portals to the Past recently. As part of their history study the pupils spent the morning learning how children in the era would spend all day working. Some pupils dressed in appropriate clothing to the roles undertaken by Victorian children and discovered different equipment that they would have used. Next they took part in activities including a quiz, drill and the Victorian schoolroom. The visit to the schoolroom was a shock for some pupils, a typical lesson showing the regime and standards expected in the Victorian era with punishments that would have been experienced! The afternoon was used to prepare for the visit from Queen Victoria. All the pupils had the opportunity to try out traditional Victorian games, some even challenged the teachers much to the pupils amusement. Favourite parts of the day included walking whilst balancing a book on their head; chanting tables and poems in the classroom and drill practice, exercising to music.
