But it was all good fun for the Friday visit for year 4 for their Viking experience day - and children and staff had gone to great lengths to dress up for the occasion to make the invaders feel at home.

The day at Caister Middle School was led by Portals to the Past, whose members explained about the origins of the Vikings and their achievements in sailing the northern oceans. There was a fair bit of showing off as well, something Vikings are renowned for!

The children took part in several workshop activities, ranging from a quiz through to chain mail making. And they were thrilled with learning about the weaponry and seeing what would happen to a skull - or in this case a melon - if hit by a long axe.

The day ended with games and a full scale battle!

Year leader Grundi Bloodaxe said the children had learned an awful lot throughout the day and would take the experience and always remember what they did. He also thanked the parents for making such an effort to dress their children appropriately for the day.
