GENEROUS Caister shoppers boosted a nationwide campaign to feed those in need this Christmas after donating more than 1,200 meals through the village’s Tesco store.

The supermarket giant joined forces with food bank charities the Trussell Trust and Fare Share to collect 1,000 tonnes of food, which will now be distributed to families and individuals in need over the festive season.

Shoppers in Caister donated a wide range of items to the Help Feed People in Need appeal, with many contributing cans of soup and tinned tomatoes. But many customers also took the opportunity to add some yuletide spirit to the donation drive by handing in mince pies and Christmas puddings.

Derek Collins, Tesco store manager, said: “We’re delighted the people of Caister have come out to support this vital cause. We’ve been overwhelmed by customers generosity and hopefully the food collected will go some way to help people less fortunate this Christmas.

“Thank you so much for all the support.”

Lindsay Boswell, CEO of Fare Share also thanked customers who had supported the appeal and said their help would go towards feeding thousands of vulnerable people.

Nearly 900 Tesco stores took part in last weekend’s campaign and the retail chain has pledged to top up donations by 30pc to further boost the appeal.
