A CAISTER pensioner is calling for extra drainage to be installed to prevent his back garden from being flooded during heavy rainfall.

Bernard Dyball, 74, of Saxon Gardens said his back garden regularly became flooded during bad weather and the problem had got so serious he had resorted to installing his own open drain to take the water away from his garden before the water seeped into his home.

He said the water escaped from a manhole cover over a drain between his back garden and the village's Lidl supermarket which he believed took away rain water draining from the supermarket's roof.

Mr Dyball, who lives with wife Jill, 74, added his flooding problems stemmed back to the original planning of the store, which had been built 5ft higher than the lowest part of his back garden.

He said the open drain he had created carried water from his back garden into the road in front of his home.

“It gets ever so bad. My back garden is all flooded and it comes down to my drain in the front. The council will complain that I am putting water on the highway and I will say what can I do? I can not do anything else,” Mr Dyball said.

The problems were particularly bad last week when torrential rain triggered flash flooding across the Yarmouth borough.

A spokesman for Lidl said staff from the store were examining the inside of the drain with a camera to see if there was a blockage.

He said Lidl staff would be contacting Mr Dyball to discuss the flooding problem.
