A brave little boy was handed the chance to demonstrate his grit as a fireman with a personal induction from Fireman Sam.

Kallum Lynch, aged three, from Great Yarmouth, was granted his wish to be a fireman and meet his water-dousing hero for real, courtesy of Make-A-Wish Foundation UK, the charity that grants magical wishes to children and young people fighting life-threatening illnesses.

Kallum, who is fighting Rhabdomyosarcoma, a type of cancerous tumour, was taken to Great Yarmouth Fire Station in a red Hummer limousine, along with his parents Joanne and James, and little brother Jack, aged two, where local heroes were on hand to show him the ropes.

Kitted out in all the gear, Kallum of Copperfield Avenue, received a tour of the fire station, a lesson in using a fireman's hose and a trip in a fire engine, before rounding the day off with a meal.

Kallum's mum Joanne says: “It was a really amazing day. We were greeted by Fireman Sam as soon as we arrived and Kallum enjoyed every second of it - running around in excitement.

“The fire crew from Great Yarmouth Fire Station were very attentive and looked after Kallum the whole day, taking him round the block in the fire engine and sounding the horn. Kallum loved playing with the hose and getting the fire crew wet.

“As a keepsake, the crew gave Kallum a real fireman's hat - it's very heavy but he loves it and carries it with him everywhere. Rainbow Productions were fantastic too. They gave Kallum Fireman Sam toys which he has not stopped playing with since.

“The wish meant so much to all of us, because when Kallum was in hospital he was only ever allowed out for an hour or so.

“The doctors said Kallum would not live past the age of three and that he would not walk, so for him to have had this day and seem so spritely was amazing after all he has gone through. We are so thankful to Make-A-Wish for making it such a special day, especially as it was a day we did not think would happen.

“Kallum's next four-monthly scan is on Monday April 26, so fingers crossed come scan day. We will treasure the pictures of Kallum's day as a fireman forever, no matter what the future brings.”

There are currently 20,000 children and young people like Kallum in the UK fighting a life-threatening illness. This year alone around 1,000 children will ask for wishes to be granted. To grant all these Make-A-Wish needs to raise at least 5 million in 2010.
