A PACK of cards decided the winner of one of the ward seats in the Great Yarmouth Borough Council elections count this morning.

Labour gained the council after election officials were forced to settle the contest by drawing lots following a dead heat between the two candidates.

Both the Conservatives and Labour polled 1034 votes in the Yarmouth North ward. The result was still the same following a recount so election officials took out a pack of cards stating that aces were high.

Sitting Conservative councillor Robert Beck went first drawing a three, but his Labour challenger Charlie Marsden drew an eight and was declared the winner.
