A 50,000 fightback is to be launched against bird waste building up on the canopy at Great Yarmouth Market Place.

In six weeks' time it is hoped that work will start on putting up a droppings-resistant canopy over the stalls at the popular market - famous for its tasty chips.

Yarmouth Borough Council has decided to install the canopy as the current covering is beginning to look its age after 15 years of braving the elements and birds.

The new white canopy will be covered in an easily cleanable fabric which means that birds will no longer be able to leave any unwanted deposits.

And it is hoped that the canopy will be ready in time to impress trippers to the town at the start of the holiday season.

Chris Dove, the council's capital project manager, admitted that any new structure in the resort should be designed to combat pigeon and seagull droppings.

He said: “In Yarmouth you just have to make allowances for the birds. The canopy was looking a bit tired and it is the right time to replace it.

“I am sure the new canopy will bring a bit of vibrancy to the market.”

Philip Blake, of the canopy-covered H Blake Family Butchers, said the new covering was a good idea as people using his stall did tell him the present one was a bit tatty.

The council has put in a planning application for the Market Place canopy and, if approved, work will start in about six weeks' time.

To avoid any disruption to the market traders, the installation work will take place on consecutive Sundays and will also involve repainting the supporting columns.
