Casino event in Hemsby hits jackpot to raise grand sum for palliative care

Lady luck shined on a charity event that saw punters heading to the gaming tables in Hemsby.

Organised by Pat Roberts and Gary Turner a casino event held on Saturday at the Bermuda Club raised over £1000 for Palliative Care East, the charity behind The Louise Hamilton Centre.

Sited in the grounds of Gorleston’s James Paget University Hospital the centre relies on local fundraising to provide the £200,000 needed to keep it going every year.

Mrs Roberts said the distinctive yellow hub had helped her when her musician husband Pete died and hailed the many volunteers who gave their time and expertise to support people with terminal illnesses and their families.

She said some 13 different services were offered under its roof including relaxation and massage in its six treatment rooms.

The centre is also able to offer benefits advice and has a dedicated cancer service.

On the day many locals who had bought tickets in advance as well as holiday makers passing by tried their luck playing different games on five tables.

The fundraising total was boosted by a raffle with donated prizes including a week’s holiday at Haven and a cruise on the Thames.
