THIS year's Great Yarmouth Beer and Cider Festival is providing an opportunity for making - as well as tasting - tipples.

Budding brewers are being invited to take part in a beer making competition by organisers of the festival, which takes place throughout the Whitsun Bank Holiday weekend.

The winner will receive 100 of beers from Yarmouth's Blackfriars Brewery, a trophy donated by former Lacons head brewer Michael Falcon and a Ritchies home brewing kit.

Chief steward of Yarmouth Mr Falcon will be among the judging panel along with Blackfriars owner Bill Russell.

The best brew will be announced at a special trade session before the start of the festival at the historic Priory Centre.

Mr Russell said: “A good beer is a bit like a happy relationship, it needs patience, love and affection.

“Like many micro brewers I started making my first pints at home. It is very rewarding and a bit like cooking, the more you do it the better you get. Beers will be judged on clarity, taste, appearance and condition.

The cost of entering the competition is 5 or 10 with a beer making kit purchased from Blackfriars Brewery.

For more information about the competition call Blackfriars Brewery on 01493 847961.
