Changes proposed to two hotels based in Yarmouth and Gorleston

The Marine Hotel and Pub, on Great Yarmouth’s Marine Parade, has submitted plans to refurbish the attic and second floor accommodation.

Meanwhile across the bridge in Gorleston, the Pier Hotel has renewed plans first submitted last year to provide tables and chairs for people to eat and drink outside the hotel.

Adam Bromwich, landlord of the Marine Pub said: “We just needed to submit a planning application so that we could do some refurbishment work, so that we can modernise the hotel.

“It is something we felt needed doing and should improve the visitor’s overall experience when work is done.”

The work in the application would also consist of improvements to four attic windows, as well as putting a new one in.

The Pier Hotel originally submitted plans to bring in new picnic tables and portable screen surrounds adjacent to the sea wall opposite the hotel, in January 2015. The plans were conditionally approved by the council two months later.

In minutes for the meeting in which the matter was approved, the council heard that letters of objection had been received citing obstruction of the promenade, loss of public amenity, open space and views of the sea.

The minutes however stated: “Taking into account the relatively small length of the seating area compared with the length of promenade and the width of the promenade in this area, the proposal would not result in a significant loss of open space or sea view.”

The planning group manager reported that outside seating areas were popular with local people and visitors and would enhance the facilities available for the seafront.

The Great Yarmouth and Gorleston Sailing Club originally had concerns with difficulties with access to the slipway due to the proximity of the seating area, but the original layout was then amended so boats would not have to pass between the tables.
