AN 18-year-old man is due to appear before Great Yarmouth magistrates today accused of arson in connection with a blaze in a town garage that led to the evacuation of 120 people from their homes.

The fire which broke out shortly before 3am on Friday is thought to have spread to the vehicle workshop in Albert Road from a van parked outside.

Firefighters ordered the evacuation of homes, guesthouses and hotels in neighbouring Nelson Road South and Havelock Road after discovering that a potentially explosive gas cylinder was on the premises. The garage was severely fire-damaged and a neighbouring house was wrecked by water damage.

The suspect, who lives in the Yarmouth area, was arrested over the weekend and bailed to appear in court.
