A charity jazz night has helped to raise £1,000 for the respiratory nurses at the James Paget University Hospital.

The event, held at the Royal Assembly Rooms in Great Yarmouth, was arranged by former respiratory nurse Carol Nicholls and some of her former colleagues at the hospital.

Around 100 people attended the musical night which included performances by Ms Nicholls' blues and jazz band Gin City and a group of jazz dancers dressed in 1940s style dresses.

Ms Nicholls said: 'I think that the evening went really well and everybody seemed to enjoy themselves in what was a great atmosphere. It is such a great cause and I hope that the money will go a long way to help the nurses provide the best treatment possible for their patients.

'I hope that the evening also helped to raise awareness about the amazing work the respiratory nurses do at the hospital and what conditions they actually cover because many people are unaware of the type of work they do.'

The respiratory ward at the James Paget Hospital covers all long-term respiratory conditions apart from lung cancer and currently consists of then nurses, along with three administration members of staff.

The nurses also provide a service to patients who use oxygen for their conditions at their homes along with providing patients a pulmonary rehabilitation programme, which includes working alongside two community gyms in Yarmouth and Lowestoft.

Alongside all of the musical entertainment there was also a super auction where a day of sailing on the Broads was on offer to the highest bidder - which ended up being £70 - and a raffle full of hampers and chocolates which contributed £350 towards the grand total.

Ms Nicholls, who worked at the hospital for 15 years, added: 'Some of my old friends from the department came along so it was great to see them all again. The dancers were fabulous in their 1940s gear - that was certainly a favourite on the night and really added something special to the evening.

'I would just like to thank everybody who came along and also to all those who donated items for the event. Everybody was so generous on the night and all of your support is really appreciated.'
