A charity shop in Gorleston has been burgled and is appealing for donations to help replenish stock.

The Sue Ryder shop, in the High Street, was broken into between 5pm on Saturday, March 24, and 9am on Monday, March 26.

The back window of the shop was damaged and approximately £140 in cash was reported as stolen, as well as a significant amount of stock.

The shop closed temporarily during police enquiries, but has since reopened and is appealing for donations from the public to help replace the lost cash and stock.

Sarah Duddridge, shop manager, said: “It’s such a great shame that our shop, which has been supporting Sue Ryder’s care for nearly 30 years, was broken into over the weekend. It’s one thing to break into a shop, and another to target a charity shop.”

The shop is one of 450 across the UK that support Sue Ryder’s care for people with life-changing conditions like cancer, heart failure and lung disease.

Ms Duddridge said the money lost could have made a real difference to a dying person.

She said: “When we take into account the money and stock stolen by the thieves, the cost of the repairs to the window and the trading time we missed out on due to our temporary closure, we estimate that we will have lost over £700. This is money that could have paid for a Sue Ryder hospice nurse for a week – someone who cares for dying people, their family and their friends.”

The shop is keen to boost its stock, with the aim of recouping the losses inflicted by the break-in.

Ms Duddridge added: “We’d love some extra donations to help us get back on our feet. Good quality items of clothing, books and homewares are very welcome, and can be dropped off in person at the shop on the High Street. Our friendly team are also happy to chat about volunteering opportunities for those who are interested.”

The shop is located at 85 High Street, Gorleston. For more information on how to make a donation or volunteer, call 01493 441067 or email gorleston5092@suerydercare.org.
