A key route out of Yarmouth was closed to traffic earlier tonight a result of a major chemical alert.

A container containing a chemical believed to potentially be methanol fell off a trailer being towed by a large four-wheel drive vehicle on the Hall Quay side of Haven Bridge.

Fire-fighters were alerted at about 5.35pm and the area was quickly cordoned off to traffic.

Station manager John Baker said: “The container fell on its side and concern was raised because of the nature of the chemical.

“However we have now ascertained there is no leak and we are waiting for the container to be safely recovered.”

Inspector Paul McCarthy said: “Fortunately the incident happened at the end of the rush-hour so traffic congestion has not been too bad.”

He said southbound vehicles were being diverted along Acle New Road and over Breydon Bridge. The quay side was reopened to traffic at about 7pm and the bridge reopened to pedestrians and traffic at about 9pm.
