PART of Hemsby beach was cordoned off yesterday after two chemical drums were washed up on the sand.

The discovery was made just after 10am and the coastguard, police and fire service were called out. The coastguard cordoned off the area and two fire engines, plus the fire service's chemical incident unit, were sent to the scene but took no action after the contents were not deemed to be hazardous.

The two 25-litre containers were removed by police. One was leaking a milky white fluid, while the other was cracked and full of seawater. A coastguard spokesman said: “It had clearly been afloat for some time.”
