GREAT Yarmouth Chess Club will be hoping to produce some magical performances at their new home - the Alchemy Centre.

Yarmouth College volunteered the use of the centre, which offers training and support to young entrepreneurs, when it learned the club was looking for a new base.

Dave Twitchell, captain of the club first team, who have been suitably renamed Yarmouth Alchemists, said: “We are immensely grateful to the college and would also like to thank Paul Garrod who allowed us to use his Furzedown Hotel for a season and a half after we were left homeless by the closure of the Labour Club.”

College director Roy Hughes said: “Allowing the club to use the centre is part of our on-going commitment to work with the community, and we also hope some students will use the opportunity to join the club.”

He said changing the name of the club first team to Alchemists was a way of promoting the Alchemy Centre as an idea.

The start to their campaign in the top division of the Norfolk league resulted in a 2.5-1.5 away win to Norwich Dons A. Results: (Yarmouth players first) Stephen Pullinger 0 Dave Hall 1, David Twitchell 1 Steve Moore 0, Graham Blowers 1 Terry Glover 0, Kevin Shaw ½ Tim Lenton ½.
