CHILDREN as young as four made a difference in the world today by holding an appeal for Haiti. Alice Rees and Morgan Gerrity both 10 ,decided to organise a day of events at Fairhaven Primary School in South Walsham to raise money for the people involved in the disaster. Alice said: “I was watching the news and there were dead bodies everywhere, it was horrible and the people who survived are now dying too because there isn't enough food, I felt we needed to do something.”

Morgan said: “They need our help we have so much more than they do at the moment.” The girls organised a whole school non-uniform day, encouraging the other children to wear blue and red the colours of the Haiti flag. They also ran a poster competition for the older ones to design a fantasy island and the younger ones a fantasy animal. Molly Ringwood, 9, one of the winners of the poster competition designed an island called The Land of Joy, where there is no sadness and no bad things, because she thought this fantasy island is just what the people in Haiti need right now. Alice and Morgan also organised an after-school cake sale and wrote to parents to ask them to contribute cakes and buy them on the day. The total the girls raised with the school community of just 102 pupils was an amazing 280.

“It is heartwarming to know that young people today really do care about others and the world around them and we are proud that our children here try to make a difference no matter how young they are,” said a proud headteacher Mrs Fearns.
