Light up plan to put Great Yarmouth’s key areas in the night-time spotlight

The newly-formed Civic Society has aims to “clean up, green up and light up” the town, and that includes illuminating heritage buildings and structures, sucb as South Quay, Haven Bridge, Vauxhall Bridge, Breydon Bridge and the new river crossing, and trees in prominent places as in St George’s Park.

Chairman Hugh Sturzaker said: “The aims of the society are to make Great Yarmouth a better place in which to live and we plan to preserve, protect and promote Great Yarmouth with pride. It is important people living here should take responsibility of their own properties and the area around.

“Lighting up buildings and the bridges would greatly improve the appearance of the town at night and help to attract people into it and so help the night-time economy.”

Among other projects being worked on are liasing with Great Yarmouth in Bloom to “green up” the town by an increased provision of plants and flowers; and making awards to businesses, shops, cafes, hotels and guest houses which go that extra mile to improve the look of their premises.

The society is currently working on the criteria and details of awards and it is hoped to involve schools and pupils - encouraging the younger generation to play an active part in highlighting heritage.

Mr Sturzaker said: “There are many ways in which residents can help achieve the challenge, from sponsoring the provision of planters, plants and hanging baskets; donating spare plants and containers to the society; sponsoring the illumination of a building or tree – and an award; making sure premises and the area around it are well maintained – and get involved and spread the word!”

At a meeting of the society last week, it was reported membership now stood at more than 100 people, who had joined for an annual fee of £10.

It also plans to get involved in planning applications within the town, particularly in heritage and tourism areas.
