EVERGREEN music legend Cliff Richard is the artist whose songs are the most requested by patients from their hospital bed at James Paget University Hospital.

Of the 500 requests made to Hospital Radio Yare, the enduring entertainer emerged as the perfect tonic for people in need of a boost, way ahead of his closest rivals Daniel O'Donnell and Frank Sinatra.

Request collectors visit the wards and pass requests on to the presenter every day ahead of a live request show at 8pm, which is repeated the following morning. Request slips are saved and at the end of each week the information is transferred to a computer database. Every October the data is analysed to reveal the results which help the station to map its content.

This year there were around 500 requests taken which covered a huge variety of artists and material.

Software engineer, Shane Carson, said: “This result shows just how many fans Cliff has, and that is in spite of the virtual ban on the air play given to his records.”
