Cliff Park Infant and Junior Schools, in Orde Avenue, are pleading with parents to follow the law and stop parking on the road outside the schools.

Problems have arisen due to the fact Orde Avenue is a residential cul-de-sac with no parking along the road – leading to some parents parking in an illegal and dangerous manner during the school run.

Phil Reid, headteacher at Cliff Park Infants, said: “The difficulties with traffic and parking around the school local area have been an ongoing issue for many years and remain a very serious concern for staff, parents, governors and directors.

“The safety of our children and families coming to and from school is of paramount importance.”

He added: “We constantly appeal to parents, friends and families to avoid driving along Orde Avenue, park legally and take seriously their role in keeping others safe.

“We believe that by parking away from school and driving with the needs of others in mind, parents and carers will be able to support our children in staying safe.”

One parent, Grace Moore, described the horrifying moments her five-year-old daughter slipped into the path of a reversing car.

She said: “It was just before Christmas and it was one of those mornings when the road was really icy.

“There were so many cars parked where they shouldn’t have been and we were forced to walk on the road.

“Elsie was walking with her friend’s dad when she slipped on the ice behind a reversing car.

“I’m sure reversing car didn’t even see her.

She added: “There is nothing to stop people doing dangerous manoeuvres at the end of the cul-de-sac.”

Fellow parent Linda Sedgwick condemned the parents who continue to ignore the rules.

She said: “They are educating their children that rules don’t apply to them – it’s just laziness.

“The school has its hands tied because it is a public road. It’s a sad situation people don’t see the danger.”
