It promises to be a party fit for a Queen, set against a stunning backdrop of the Gorleston Cliffs.

The Gorleston Clifftop Festival committee is organising a village fete style celebration to mark the Queen’s 90th Birthday next weekend, Saturday and Sunday, July 30-31.

The party will host classic games such as splat the rat, bowling for the pig as well as a coconut shy with prizes to be won.

A fancy dress competition for children visiting the arena will be taking place on Saturday and youngsters will also be able to design their own crowns and tiaras over both days.

A royal knees up would not be complete without entertainment – during the festival there will be a marching band, maypole dancing and music through the ages.

A tea dance jive will be taking place from 4pm on Saturday.

Picasso’s café, normally open for business on Gorleston High Street, will be hosting a grand afternoon tea tent which will seat 100 people and organiswers say there will be plenty of space to enjoy a well sought after high tea. Bookings are being taken and can be made via Picasso’s café.

The event coordinator Vicky Webber said she hoped it would bring something different to the two-day festival.

She added: “As it’s a celebration fit for royalty, visitors are encouraged to don their best suits and dresses and enter the best dressed competition being held on Sunday.”

She said that the committee have been working with young people from the Anchorage Trust running sessions on a Wednesday afternoon to help organise the event.

The event has been funded by the grant recently available from Great Yarmouth Borough Council.

Festival organisers were offered funding to work with young people through the Anchorage Trust, a community housing and support organisation for young people.

Until recently the youngsters were homeless and Ms Webber said this provided them with an the opportunity to integrate with their local community and get involved in one of the biggest events in the area.
