The schedules are being worked on and the last touches are put to studio equipment as Coastal Radio 107.3 presenters get down to the real business of going on air.

The community radio station starts its trial 28-day period from August 4 based in Fastolff House in Regent Street, Great Yarmouth. If the trial is successful and the team gets the required number of listeners, it is hoped Coastal Radio will become a full-time station for the community, run by the community and featuring members of the community.

As August 4 nears organiser Simon Jones, said the station will feature music, chat, community news and local issues and interviews with people from the community.

There will be local content from 6am to midnight daily, with music filling the remainder of the time.

Simon explained: “We’re working on the schedules, sorting out who’s presenting when and what. The majority of the presenters have experience, and the youngest member of the team is 16 year old Jamie Skinner, who has done radio at school.”

He added: “There is a lot of preparation to do by the presenters. They need to know what they are going to play and say, and will need details about the tracks they play.”

Around 40 people are involved in the project already, but there is room for more.

Fellow organiser Dave Starbuck added: “If anyone has experience to bring to the party, or just wants to come along and see what’s needed, they are very welcome.”

Simon said Coastal Radio is appealing for listener’s requests and any charity or group which has any what’s on events which can be promoted on air.

The station is being funded by a £5,000 Norfolk Community Foundation grant, together with advertising revenue and sponsorship. Listeners will be able to tune in around the Yarmouth borough and in north Lowestoft, with the signal carrying around 10 miles from the town centre transmitter.

It will also be broadcasting over the internet to keep up with the growth of online radio. There will be a mix of music from the late 1950s to current chart hits mixed with local news, community information and outside broadcasts.

A number of well-known voices will be on air including Simon Jones, Dave Starbuck, Jamie Skinner,Phil Marshall, Nathan James, Richard Routledge, Julian Taylor, Neil Loads, Paul Dennis, John Cross, James Barley, Colin Comer, Andy Pullum. Dale Burman.

The team is looking for people with all sorts of skills, from organising the paperwork and schedules, to setting up interviews with local groups and people as well as dealing with the vital social media outlets, both Twitter and Facebook. And they will be at the Gorleston Clifftop festival this weekend handing out leaflets, sponroed and printed by Blackwell Print.

The new station is being run as a social enterprise which means any profits will be being ploughed back into the station.
