The station is a member station of the National Coastwatch Institution (NCI), a voluntary organisation which began when the Coastguard withdrew from coastal lookouts around the country in the 1990s.
Situated at the harbour entrance the station covers 64 square miles, operates 364 days a year and works closely with Yarmouth Coastguard advising them of incidents.
