A collector has paid £450 for a rare 19th century £1 banknote which is believed to show one of the medieval gateways to Great Yarmouth.

Richard Dennett, a dealer and collector from Downham Market, was delighted at securing the note, dated 1822, which is believed to be the only remaining example of its kind in the world.

He was delighted with the artefact issued by the Yarmouth and Suffolk Bank and has pictures of landmarks in the town on it.

Mr Dennett bought the note via the internet earlier this week when it was being sold by the auctioneers, Spinks.

“I bought this particular example because it is a really rare note and because it is local and English. I intend to keep it for a while but I may sell it in the future,” he said.

“I have been collecting East Anglian and Norfolk bank notes for 16 years and as far as I am aware this is the only surviving 1822 note in existence,” he said.

Mr Dennett explained that up to 1921 there was a London currency and a local currency.

“Most of the notes issued locally are now very rare and I have 12 in my collection so I was pleased to bid for this note”, he said. “I bought it over the internet on Wednesday and in view of its rarity value I think I was lucky to get it as cheap as I did.”

Mr Dennett said the note depicted a medieval castle gateway.
