LOCAL projects in the Magdalen, Shrublands and Elmhurst Court areas of Gorleston are set to share 10,000 after receiving the backing of local people.

After receiving a number of bids, a short-list of eighteen was produced for residents to decide who to vote for.

Ballot slips delivered to homes for those who wanted to vote by the post - with 579 residents in taking part in the poll.

The cash came from Great Yarmouth Borough Council's Participatory Budgeting scheme

Successful projects received their funding at a special event at Shrublands Youth and Adults Centre on Magdalen Way last week.

The projects are:

1000 to Great Yarmouth special Olympians to help train twenty poolside assistants to support disabled swimmers

1000 to a police scheme for school leavers to visit the Parachute Regiment in Colchester

1000 to Cherry Road Sheltered Housing tenants to improve the communal room.

1000 to Magdalen Memory Club

1000 to The Parents' Panel to take children to Colchester Zoo and the Hippodrome Circus

1000 for sheltered housing residents for a film projector

Colleen Walker, Norfolk County Councillor for Magdalen division, said: “This project has allowed money from the Norfolk County Strategic Partnership to go to local projects that residents themselves have decided are worth backing.

“It is pleasing to see that those projects spread across the area and benefit a variety of different age groups.”

Magdalen ward borough councillor Patricia Page, said: “The large number of people that took part in deciding where this money should go proves just how much local people are interested in their community.”

The borough council has five other participatory budgeting projects in Southtown, Cobholm and Halfway House; south and central Yarmouth; Martham; Belton and the Great Yarmouth Older People's Network.
