A coroner has warned drivers to check the condition of their tyres after an inquest heard insufficient tread led to a crash which killed a popular police authority worker.

Mother-of-one Sue Brady, 45, who worked for Norfolk Police Authority, died after her Porsche 911 left the road and overturned when she lost control of it on the A11 near Hethersett last August.

An inquest in Norwich into her death yesterday heard how the crash was caused by a combination of damp road conditions and too little tread on one of her rear tyres which caused the car to “twitch”, slide and overturn.

Greater Norwich coroner William Armstrong called for the tragedy to be a warning to everyone to check their tyres regularly.

He said: “This tragedy came about as a combination of a defective tyre and damp conditions and serves as a warning to all of us.

“I would like to offer my deepest sympathies to Susan's family. I am mindful that she was a popular and well-liked person and she was a popular and highly respected member of staff at the police authority.”

Ms Brady, who lived at The Great Court, Royal Naval Hospital, Great Yarmouth, was on her way to work in Wymondham on August 7 when the crash happened.

She had been employed as a partnerships officer at the police authority for the past 12 years and had a teenage son, William, and partner Ian Wilday.

A post-mortem examination revealed she died from chest injuries.

During the inquest, held at the city's Assembly House in Theatre Street, it was heard she had not been speeding or driving recklessly.

PC Wendy Biddle, an investigating officer, said: “The accident was caused by a combination of factors - damp conditions and a rear wheel drive vehicle with an insufficient tread pattern.

“When the car slipped, there was not sufficient grip to hold the vehicle steady and it became unsteady and caused the driver to lose the control.”

Ms Brady has previously been described as “professional, bubbly and approachable” by her friends and colleagues.

Her brother Michael Plant said he wanted to thank the police authority and Norfolk police for their support.

Mr Armstrong recorded a verdict of death by road traffic accident.
