PLANS to have the Acle War Memorial listed to preserve it for future generations have been backed by the village's parish council.
Peter Kingsley, chairman of the Acle branch of the Royal British Legion, asked for the council's backing at a meeting on Monday to ensure the 88-year-old memorial in the grounds of St Edmund's Church was covered by law.
He said the legion had decided to approach the council first because it had helped to maintain the memorial whenever it needed repair in the past.
The plan to list the monument to service personnel who died during the two world wars is aimed at ensuring there is a lasting memory to their sacrifices long after veterans of the wars have died. The decision is based on the recommendations of the War Memorial Trust.
Mr Kingsley said: “In years to come we feel that people might not be so aware of the war memorial and we would like it listed to ensure that it is covered by the law.”
