The St George’s flag reportedly appeared on the roundabout in Brasenose Avenue sometime during Sunday or Monday, prior to England’s last gasp victory over Tunisia.

A Norfolk County Council spokesperson said: “We don’t usually condone unauthorised alterations to roundabouts, but we’re in no hurry to remove this particular example until after the World Cup.”

Taking to social media, many people showed their support for the modification, which has reportedly been made to numerous roundabouts in the area.

Craig Randall said: “These are great! We should keep them this way.”

Iris Sullivan said: “Whoever you are well done.”

Jade Burcham said: “This is the best thing ever.”

However, the red cross did cause confusion for some.

Hannah Lucy Allen said: “I honestly thought these were signs to say not to drive onto the white circle.”

England’s next game in Group G is against Panama at 1pm on Sunday.
