People who are struggling financially in the Great Yarmouth area can now take advantage of a new credit union service point in the town.

Norfolk Save & Borrow, which is operated by Norwich Credit Union, has opened the service point at the DIAL charity advice offices at 26 King Street.

Thanks to a grant from the Big Lottery Fund Awards for All scheme and the partnership with DIAL, the credit union service will initially operate every Monday from 2pm to 4.30pm.

MORE; Credit union launchedJon Warne, president of Norwich Credit Union, said: “We’re thrilled to have this opportunity to make credit union membership more accessible in the Great Yarmouth area.

“Credit unions encourage members to save for a rainy day and only borrow what they can afford to safely repay. There are great additional perks to credit union membership, such as free life insurance for most members and access to low-cost loans, with no hidden fees.

“For convenience, we also offer handy payment cards and pre-loaded cash cards, as well as a face-to-face service.”

Jo Howes, project manager at DIAL, said: “With the roll-out of Universal Credit, we’ve already seen there is a great demand for this sort of financial service locally, and we’ve had lots of interest building in the last few weeks.

“We are still looking for more volunteers, so please get in touch if you would like to help out.”

MORE; Universal Credit woesDepending on more volunteers coming forward, the team intend to add weekly Wednesday openings from 10.30am to 1pm, in future.

The DIAL service point is Norfolk Save & Borrow’s second in Great Yarmouth.

A Friday morning service was launched in March 2016, and operates from the Neighbourhood Centre at 135 King Street, 10.30am to 12.30pm.

Membership of Norfolk Save & Borrow costs £1 (free for juniors) and a £1 annual administration fee thereafter. People need to bring two forms of ID, one with a picture if possible, with them to the service point, to prove their identity and current address.
