People in Great Yarmouth are being encouraged to get on their bikes this Sunday in the wake of a damning survey.

Figures released by Sport England in April revealed that people in Great Yarmouth are the least physically active in England, with more than a third failing to manage 30 minutes of exercise a week.

Now, cycle retailer, Pedal Revolution, are encouraging townspeople to fight back against the statistics by saddling up for the Tour De Broads.

Neil Turner, director at Pedal Revolution, said: “We were mortified at these latest statistics and wanted to do something to help and demonstrate that Great Yarmouth can be a more active place to live and more family friendly when it comes to being physically active.

“The Tour de Broads started as an event for regular cyclists but has become an event for riders new and old, old and young, and of all abilities.

“This year, alongside our longer 50, 75, 100 mile routes, we have a gentle 25 mile route and a family friendly five mile tour of the town’s cycle paths.”

In order to help inspire the community to get active, Pedal Revolution have invited professional international cyclist, Daniele Ratto, to the event.

Mr Turner said: “We shared the recent article with him and he was immediately asking if he could help us promote cycling in the town.”

The Pushing Ahead Scheme will also be sponsoring 100 free places for the family ride event.

The scheme is run in partnership between Pedal Revolution and the county council and allows people to borrow brand new bikes free of charge for up to four weeks.

The rides start and finish at Great Yarmouth Sea Life Centre, with the main routes leaving between 8am and 9am and the all-day 25 mile rides departing at 9.30am.

The family ride will use the same closed road start and finish area adjacent to the Sea Life Gardens and rides can be started between 11am and 1pm.

All riders will receive a medal and a hard-earned ice cream upon completion.
