Diamond day for Ada and Robert

A couple have had a week to remember with the birth of their first great grandchild and the milestone of their 60th wedding anniversary.

Ada and Robert George, of Almond Road, Gorleston, married at St Peter’s Church, on January 28, 1956.

It is a very special day in the hearts of the couple who had met on the same date in 1953, and then became engaged on the same date in 1955.

The couple have three children, Robert, Susan and Coleen, six grandchildren, and as of January 31, a great-grand child.

Mrs George, 80, said: “We celebrated our anniversary on the Saturday night with family. We had been hoping our great grand-daughter would be born on the same day as our anniversary, but still we are delighted.”

The couple met after they were set up together on a date and for a period of time as Mrs George lived in Holt, Mr George would cycle the round trip between Gorleston and Holt, to see her.

Mrs George, said: “I was worried for a time as Robert had to get permission off my father to marry me.

“Robert liked going outdoors, he liked to go walking, cycling and he worked on the police force for many years.

“I was very different as I liked to stay indoors.”

Before meeting his future wife, Mr George, 83, completed his national service between 1950 and 1952, doing his training in Great Yarmouth before being relocated to Changi, Singapore.

From the age of 29, he worked as police officer until 1989, when he then became an usher at Yarmouth Magistrates Court until 1997.

Meanwhile, Mrs George worked at Lacons Brewery and Birds Eye after their children had grown up.

Today, both the couple are fighting cancer together; Mrs George has oesophageal cancer and Mr George has bladder cancer. Mrs George has undergone chemotherapy and radiotherapy, while Mr George has had an operation to remove his tumour.

Mrs George, said: “We are both fighting it together. Robert is doing a lot of the work around the house which I was doing, and he is doing a good job to be fair.”
