A 33-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested following a series of bin fires in the early hours in Great Yarmouth.

Police were called to four incidents between 2am and 3.40am on Friday morning in the south Yarmouth area.

At about 2am officers were called to a bin fire on Malborough Square, at the rear of Apsley Road, where a bin fire spread to a wooden fence and gate.

Forty minutes later police were called to a second fire at Rodney Road where three wheelie bins had been set alight.

A further two reports of fires were made at about 2.50am at Exmouth Road and 3.40am at Camden Place.

A man was arrested in connection with the incidents and remains in police custody.

The issue of bin fires is currently a priority for the South Yarmouth Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) which is working with partner agencies, including the council and fire service, to address the problem.

Inspector Nick Cheshire said: “Our swift action reflects the serious nature of these incidents. The vast majority of bin fires are started deliberately and while they may begin small a serious fire can develop which could endanger property and life.

“We are urging residents to take responsibility for their bins to help prevent these incidents and asking residents to contact police immediately if they see a bin fire.”

Residents are advised to only put bins out on collection day and as close to the time the binmen come as possible.

Householders should also keep bins clear of building and vehicle and do not obstruct doors.

Anyone with information in relation to the incidents should contact the South Yarmouth SNT on 0845 456 4567 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. In an emergency always dial 999.
