An elderly couple and their neighbour were woken up in the early hours yesterday after a car left a Norfolk main road and ploughed into their living rooms.

A newly-decorated sitting room was damaged in the drama on the A149 Yarmouth to Smallburgh road at Repps with Bastwick. And the impact of the 4.30am crash left a hole in both houses.

The driver was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to hospital. Police confirmed later that he had been arrested.

The damage was inspected by a construction team, although it was unclear last night whether walls would have to be taken down.

The owner of one of the houses, who did not want to be named, said he heard the bang and alerted the emergency services immediately.

Firefighters from Martham were supported by three crews from Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service's Urban Search and Rescue team to help shore up the buildings and make the area safe.
