Every subject tipped its hat towards reading and novels with geography and maths incorporating something bookish into their learning.

Preparations for the global celebration of reading began well in advance - with some books baked to perfection ready to be consumed.

During form time students created book covers and blurbs based on The Story of Me, giving them the chance to be the main feature of a novel.

Each department planned its own literacy lessons to continue the book theme throughout the day.

Maths focused on reading about the different ages of novels, prompting discussion of the purpose and difficulty of books over the last couple of decades.

Geography took time to find articles related to their current topic of study, and focused on non-fiction for their lessons.

The main event was the readathon involving over 120 students reading for the entire day.

The students set up camp in the library and drama studio, and got lost in their favourite books, while raising hundreds of pounds for charity.

The food technology department staged the Great Cliff Park Book Bake.

Students brought in phenomenal creations from home that they had prepared in advance. These were judged by chief tasters Mr Whitely and Miss Cunningham.

Mrs Kapour also baked a Gruffalo cake.

In food technology lessons the students baked book title cakes and biscuits, including playing card biscuits from Alice in Wonderland, and a caterpillar cake from The Hungry Caterpillar.

Health and social care students ran reading and colouring activities for children from Busy Bees at the James Paget Hospital.
