Instead of being hunched over paper on desks high school students have unleashed their creativity on to big, bold canvases.

This year’s GCSE art show at Flegg Ormiston High School was said to the best ever with a range of “scaled up” pieces on show.

Some 40 students showed off their work at the academy in Martham.

The display showcases their final pieces as well as their sketch books and is a chance to show their families all that they have achieved.

Head of art Dan Coombes said it was the best year ever in terms of outcomes which he tagged as “absolutely amazing.”

And part of that was due to a “scaling up” approach he had adopted after visiting a premier college in Surrey.

There the students were encouraged to work in a studio setting like “real” artists, an ethos that has now been adopted at Flegg.

As well as “going big” the school has a range of art ambassadors including Rachel Thomas, Ruth Bunnewell and Norwich artist Chedgey.

Ruth Bunnewell said working with the young artists had been “inspiring” adding that as well as encouraging them to try new techniques they often had tips to pass on to her too.
