Gorleston students study heritage skills at Time and Tide Museum

Students at East Norfolk Sixth Form College have had a rare opportunity to study a range of heritage skills, including basket weaving and glass making.

The specialist workshops were arranged between the college and the Time and Tide Museum in Great Yarmouth. The students who took part found the experience very rewarding, not only in terms of getting an introduction to heritage skills and techniques, but also the opportunity to work alongside practicing contemporary artists.

Tutor Theresa Budds said: “This year we have been really fortunate to take part in a series of workshops offered by the Time and Tide Museum. Some of their artists in residence have facilitated workshops at the college in both basketry and glass making. The students took so much from the workshops and it was fascinating to see how they continued to develop the ideas into their own individual projects.”

Student Brogan Berwick said; “It was a massive pleasure to be a part of it all. I took part in three workshops, basketry, woodcarving and glass fusion. The artists that taught me the crafts were all incredible and I would like thank them for all their support.

“I think being part of Creative Collisions has helped me so much as an artist and I think I have really realised that anything is possible! I’ve always been experimental but now I feel like my work is respected as being art rather than just a classroom project.”

Tricia Hall, Chairman of Creative Collisions, said: “EN has been an absolute pleasure to work with. Some students attended the three-day workshops and on the strength of this, we arranged additional one-day workshops at the college.

“The students are focussed and reliable and they have a clear idea of how this kind of work can help them in their future.
