The Young Ones: Hillside Primary School Council had the opportunity to visit Great Yarmouth Town Hall to meet the Mayor and learn about the role of borough councillors.
The trip for the Young Ones was organised by the chair of governors Cllr Trevor Wainwright, who works closely with the thriving school council. Two elected representatives from each class (Year 1 to Year 6) and some members of staff were given a tour of the Town Hall with the Mayor. The children had the opportunity to learn about the history of the council, visit many of the important rooms and sit in the council chambers. The children had a fantastic time and really enjoyed the opportunity to sit where the actual councillors sit and use their microphones to ask the Mayor and councillors about their roles. Although they were particularly interested to discover that the chambers used to house an underground cell! The children were then asked about what changes they would like to see in the borough. One child didn’t want Retro Skate to close and another wanted more skateboarding parks. All of the children learnt a great deal from the visit and will be able to use the experience to make an even greater contribution in their own roles on the school council.
