A campaign to get a directly-elected mayor for Great Yarmouth needs to just 1,000 more petition signatures to force a referendum in May.

Town Labour politicians Trevor Wainwright and Mick Castle are delighted to have passed 2,500 signatures - on their way to 3,500 - after only launching their non-party political campaign in October.

The campaign, which would see the mayor personally taking up the reins to run the council, has already won the backing of prominent business people such as Peter Jay and Ralph Childs as well as community cam-paigners including Dennis Durrant of Gorleston Heritage Group.
